The history of FG Bond

An independent fourth-generation business

1934
Company founded by husband and wife, Fred and Violet Bond.
Fred hauled materials using a car and a trailer, Violet kept the books.

1939
Contract to haul cakes and bakery products from Bristol to the NAAFI HQ at Charmy Down and RAF Colerne, near Bath.

1944
Fred bought Marshfield Garage, with one petrol pump, a house and garage buildings, all in desperate need of repair.

1945
The first tipper lorry was bought, a Bedford, for hauling materials for local builders.

1946
Another lorry was bought, for hauling cakes from Bath to Marshfield for the local baker and for Sainsbury’s mill at Wick, near Bristol.

1947
A Commer lorry was bought, the first lorry to go on permanent haulage for Wick quarry.

1950
The first Dodge lorry was bought. Over the years a further 13 Dodge and Renault lorries were added to the fleet.

1966
Rodney Bond joined his parents in the business, to run the garage and service the lorries, Fred continued to drive.

1977
New workshops were built at the Marshfield garage for repairing cars and lorries.

1982
Violet passed away. She had continued to do all of the company’s book-work until her death. Annette, Rodney’s wife, joined the business to take over the role.

1989
The company entered the Truckfest show at Shepton Mallet for the first time. There it caught the bug for attending truck shows. The fleet has since won 100s of awards.

1990
Edward Bond joined his parents in the business. The third generation to join full time, he drove a small 7.5 tonne Dodge tipper.

1991
A new ERF lorry was bought, the first of a number to join the fleet over the next ten years.

1994
Helen Bond joined her brother and parents in the business as office manager.

2000
Further additions to the fleet including Scania and MAN, followed by DAF, Foden and Volvo.

2001
A Scania flat bed with a hiab crane was purchased, it hauled concrete floor beams.

2015
A further five of these vehicles has been added to the fleet.

2017
James Bibbings joins as a driver, making FG Bond a fourth-generation business.
